The Plastic Hunters

1. Every Saturday morning, a group of teenagers from Monastir put on gloves, take big bags and walk along the beach near their town. They call themselves “the Plastic Hunters”. The group was started two years ago by Ines Trabelsi, a fifteen-year-old pupil who was shocked when she saw a sea turtle with a plastic bag in its mouth. “I realised that our waste was a real threat to the creatures which live in the sea,” she says.

2. Since then, the Plastic Hunters have collected more than four tonnes of rubbish: bottles, cans, old fishing nets and thousands of cigarette ends. They sort everything into different bins and send the bottles and cans to a recycling centre. The rest goes to a landfill outside the town. Ines explains that plastic never really disappears. “It breaks into tiny particles. Fish eat them, and then we eat the fish,” she warns.

3. The group’s work has changed some local habits. Several cafés on the beach have stopped using plastic straws, and the town council has put new bins near the sea. However, Ines thinks that cleaning is not enough. “We must produce less rubbish in the first place,” she says. “If everyone carries a reusable bag and a water bottle, our beaches will stay clean.” Next summer, the Plastic Hunters are going to visit primary schools to teach young children how to protect the environment.

The streets and the green spaces of your town are full of rubbish, and many people do not seem to care.

Write a 10-line article for your school magazine in which you describe the problem and suggest at least three solutions to keep your town clean.

Do not write your name. Do not mention your school.

Answer elements · عناصر الإجابة
  • Layout: a title (e.g. Let’s Keep Our Town Clean!), an introduction describing the problem, a body with the solutions, a conclusion with an appeal.
  • Ideas: consequences: bad smell, diseases, insects, ugly town · solutions: more bins and recycling bins; cleaning campaigns with volunteers; fines for offenders; awareness at school; using reusable bags.
  • Useful language: should / must / mustn’t, if + present, will…, so, therefore, moreover, finally.
  • Model: Let’s Keep Our Town Clean! When you walk in our town, you can see plastic bags, bottles and food waste everywhere. This rubbish smells bad, attracts insects and may cause diseases. Moreover, it makes our town ugly. To solve this problem, the town council should put more bins and recycling bins in the streets. Offenders who throw rubbish on the ground must pay a fine. Schools can also organise cleaning campaigns every month, so that pupils learn to respect nature. Finally, each of us should use reusable bags and sort waste at home. If we all act together, our town will become clean and healthy again.
